FAMILY

This may be a little off the grid but it is something that constantly flows through my head wondering, always as I do, just what makes people do what they do:

Walking down memory lane with a friend she had known since she had been in the world, looking at how family played a distinct role in that which she became, knowing in the end, what you learn as a child

Sticks with you like the candy coating on M&M’s,

Cloaked in the familiarity of family, yet steeped high in betrayal she took a walk down memory lane while reliving the pain; having a mother who was always a bit cold, never there to lend encouragement,

Seldom sharing a kind word

A father who was drunk most of the time, limited patience articulating life’s purpose, just kept what he felt locked up inside, with the occasional outburst of rage in general conversation; would call you stupid

In the blink of an eye,

While patting his head and waving you off with his hand in dismissal - as though you were a fly
infiltrating his space, just wanting you to get up out of his face, telling you with attitude to just ‘book-it’

With a swiftness,

Knife twisted in an open wound, constantly cutting out life’s reserve as she felt in her heart it was not about love; indelibly leaving scars, memories engraved in her head for all the years she was allotted in this world;

Dysfunction family,

Was it planned all along or were they simply working with what they got, passing that dysfunction on to those who they begot, unconsciously and with no malicious intent, yet in the end, it did trickle down to their offspring’s interactions

With each other, as well as people in general;

Dealing with her sister and brothers, over the years, hurts steeped up like the excrement of a Great Dane, steaming in the early morning chill of late fall or early spring; repressed memories flooding through, as she took that stroll down memory lane with a friend,

She had known ever since she was a toddler,

Somehow at long last, finding true humor in those experiences as they flashed before her eyes in the form of remembrances; just something to think about as you blend together, because one thing for sure life sure moves us onward!
